China will return home its envoy of friendship, a giant panda named Ya Ya, who lived for two decades in Memphis, Tennessee, in the United States. This was announced by the State Forestry and Steppe Administration of China on Sunday. By agreement between the parties, the animal will be sent to Shanghai by plane in the coming days.
I was born in 2000 at the Beijing Zoo and was sent to Memphis with Le Le, another giant panda, as ambassadors of friendship in 2003. The local zoo announced at the end of 2022 that it would be bringing Ya Ya back to China after her 20-year stay in the US.
The agreement on the stay of the animal in the United States was concluded for 10 years, in 2013 it was extended for another 10 years. In February of this year, Chinese experts visited the Memphis Zoo to check on Ya Ya’s condition and found that the panda’s coat had noticeably thinned as a result of a skin disease. Now the animal is gradually being transferred to a special diet for giant pandas, which is used in China.
