China covered by the most powerful outbreak of COVID-19 in history

China’s National Health Commission has decided to stop publishing daily data on COVID-19 from Dec. 25 amid a sharp increase in the number of infections in the country after the start of the lifting of the “zero tolerance” policy, writes Reuters. The department did not indicate the reasons for this decision, but clarified that the relevant data will continue to be maintained by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the PRC.
On December 23, Bloomberg, citing a document from the National Health Commission, reported that, according to its experts, almost 37 million people could have been infected with COVID-19 in China on December 20 alone. This order of cases makes the current outbreak in China the largest in the world since the beginning of the pandemic. Zhang Wenhong, director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases of the People’s Republic of China, told the Shanghai newspaper The Paper on December 22 that the infection is expected to peak within the next week. At the same time, many experts agree that the difficult situation will persist for at least another month or two. The situation in theory can be exacerbated by the mass movement of people during the Chinese New Year, which the country in 2023 will celebrate at the end of January.
