In Florida, children under 14 years of age were banned from using social networks, this decision was made by state Governor Ron DeSantis. According to the new law, from January 2025 it will be possible to create accounts on social networks only from the age of 14 and with parental consent. You can make your own decision about registration from the age of 16. In this case, social networks will be required to delete all already created children’s pages. For violating the law, a fine of up to $50 thousand can be imposed. Restrictions are also being introduced for sites with sexual content; to enter them you will now need to confirm your age. Florida officials say social media is harming children in a variety of ways, including increasing rates of depression and suicide.
Kommersant FM found out from Russian entrepreneurs whether they allow their children to freely use the Internet and how they evaluate the law adopted in the United States.
Founder of the Belaya Dacha group of companies Viktor Semenov: “This is very correct, the main thing is not to go from one extreme to the other. In general, taking away tablets from children will probably still be wrong, but I am for a reasonable restriction. It seems to me that children under 14 definitely do not need social networks. Or it should be some kind of, conditionally, children’s, specialized social networks. As for the grandchildren, my children are now acting quite carefully, and they themselves, in the absence of government restrictions, introduce similar rules in the family.”
Owner of Mr.Doors company Maxim Valetsky: “I allow my children everything; any prohibitions only arouse in them the desire to circumvent them. The task of parents is not to prohibit, but to teach children how to do something safely. Explain to them that on social networks they should only communicate with people they really know. Children will always find a way around the ban. One of your friends who is 15 years old will help someone who is 12 years old register. I am against any control; children need to be instilled with a sense of responsibility from an early age. This is much more effective, important and necessary than a ban.”
CEO of Finn Flare Ksenia Ryasova: “Children under 14 years old definitely don’t need freedom, especially when it comes to registering on social networks. This is definitely a very good law. I think it’s possible to introduce a restriction even before the age of 16; after all, it’s a difficult transitional age. We need to control the accounts themselves, as well as who logs into them. Children are prey for many inadequate people, so they must be protected. They don’t always understand that a person communicates with them for a reason, but for some dirty purposes.”
Similar bills are being discussed in other US states, including Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Ohio and Utah. However, the federal court has already blocked such initiatives twice; they considered that the restrictions violated the right of teenagers to access information. As local media note, the law in Florida may also raise questions in court.
