Chess player Sergei Karyakin said that during a humanitarian trip to the military operation zone in Ukraine in November, he got into an accident in the Kherson region. He was driving and “broke a couple of ribs” as a result.
Mr. Karyakin told RIA Novosti that he “visits the SVO zone approximately once a month.” According to him, in November he and his friends were carrying humanitarian aid and “got into a very bad accident.” “The car overturned several times, but thank God everyone survived. True, I broke a couple of ribs, they still hurt a little… Two guys got away without any scratches, and one injured his back,” said the chess player.
He clarified that he “had to avoid a head-on collision,” and the car flew into a ditch and overturned. “We were in an SUV, which is now practically beyond repair,” said Sergei Karyakin, adding that no one is to blame for the accident, since responsibility always lies with the driver.
In February 2022, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) banned chess players from competing under the flags and anthems of Russia and Belarus at the call of the International Olympic Committee. In May 2023, FIDE published a list of players invited to the World Chess Cup. Karjakin was also included in the list. He spoke out I am categorically against participating in the tournament without the opportunity to play under the Russian flag.
