Russian schoolchildren have begun to choose secondary vocational education more often. More than 60% of ninth-graders in 2023 decided to study in colleges, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said on October 2. According to her, this is approximately 1.2 million people. Moreover, such graduates are increasingly in demand in the labor market, and their employment after graduating from college exceeds 80%, the deputy chairman of the government emphasized.

The interest of schoolchildren in secondary specialized education has indeed been growing for years, as new generations try to enter the labor market as early as possible. This is what Irina Abankina, professor at the Institute for Educational Development at the Higher School of Economics, thinks:

“For two years in a row, more than half of ninth-graders have chosen colleges, while a third of them study for a fee, that is, these are not only budget programs. Everyone is trying to get modern professions and go to work.

This does not mean that college graduates do not then continue their education; many enter universities, but already working and understanding what further professional development they will need. It is indeed difficult for them to master the subject high school curriculum and then go to college. Young people prefer more intensive vocational education, which allows them to find a job.”

According to a survey conducted by the SuperJob portal in May, 29% of parents reported that their children would go to school or college after 9th grade. This is the maximum figure for 11 years of observation. At the same time, most often the choice of graduates fell on IT specialties – every fourth respondent named them. Every ninth child planned to study to become a nurse, nurse or paramedic, and 8% planned to study to become a lawyer. Another 7% each reported plans for their children to become teachers, builders, auto mechanics and skilled workers.

But how do employers evaluate college graduates compared to the rest of the workforce? “Kommersant FM” collected the opinions of business representatives from various fields.

Pavel Kulakov, CEO of data center and cloud provider Oxygen: “We are very willing to hire graduates of specialized colleges. Firstly, the level of applied knowledge has improved greatly there, and in Russia there is a fairly large shortage of specialized specialists who must do a lot of routine work in IT related to front-end development, back development, infrastructure, and design. Such employees cost the employer 20-30%, and their adaptation often goes faster.”

Olga Bazhenov, head and founder of the private kindergarten “Together with Mom”: “Many young girls who graduate from college come to us for internships, but mostly everyone then goes on to higher education. We now have a girl working for us who graduated from technical school and entered a university as a correspondence student. A young man, but a child-oriented person, loving and caring. Our wages are the same, just the bonus fund is different. There are people who have been working with us for a long time, they already have full teams, they have proven themselves well, so, of course, we want to encourage such workers.”

Vitaly Muravyov, president of the Pobeda confectionery factory: “In our case, specialists with secondary education are in demand. As a rule, these are initial positions in engineering or technological services, mechanics. The initial request is approximately the same, whether after university or after college, and then practical work shows everything. In order to retain staff, we have to hire yesterday’s graduates, train students, train them locally and reach the qualifications required for our work.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has changed the list of professions and specialties of secondary vocational education. The list includes more than 250 new items, such as a 3D printing operator, a volunteer lifeguard, a florist and a fitness instructor. At the same time, some outdated professions were removed from there, such as rag maker, porter and coachman.
