CAS published reasons for the rejected appeal of Russian clubs

The reasoning part of the decision on the appeals of the RFU to the removal of national and club teams of Russia from international competitions was published on Tuesday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
In July, the court rejected two RFU appeals.
In one of the lawsuits, the defendants were UEFA, the football federations of Belarus, Greece, Luxembourg, Denmark, Portugal, Malta and Austria.
According to the second – the International Football Federation (FIFA), the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the football federations of Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Poland, Malta and Sweden.
In addition, appeals against the UEFA decision filed by the Moscow clubs CSKA and Dynamo, St. Petersburg Zenit and Sochi were rejected.
In published CAS The documents state that “in the extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances” faced by FIFA, the decision, which was then subject to appeal, “was reasonable, proportionate and possibly necessary to ensure the safety, security and orderliness of international football events.”
The reasons for each of these decisions indicate that UEFA and FIFA had to suspend Russian teams in order to safely conduct international competitions.
The organizations did not violate their statutes and the laws of Switzerland, where their headquarters are located.
It is also noted that the RFU and Russian teams in these circumstances are victims. Members of the commission expressed the hope that the suspension would eventually be lifted, and the Russian side would recover from the negative consequences.
FIFA and UEFA in February published a joint statement on the suspension of Russian clubs and the national team from participation in international competitions due to the events in Ukraine.
For this reason, the Russian national team was excluded from the number of participants in the play-offs for reaching the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In September, UEFA did not allow the Russian national team to the draw for the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament.
