During the January holidays, Russians bought courses “from scratch.” It is possible that many citizens decided to spend part of the New Year’s bonus on their education. Representatives of leading educational platforms shared these conclusions with Kommersant FM. Against this background, Edtech companies extended New Year’s promotions until the end of the week. Now discounts reach up to 50%. The top requests include programming, design and sales on marketplaces. At the same time, the number of people wishing to improve their professional skills has increased. And this season, students are choosing mentored courses. How much does it cost to learn a new profession remotely? And why do companies increase budgets for employee education? Aelita Kurmukova sorted it out.

The online education market will grow throughout 2024—both representatives of the Edtech market and recruiting companies are confident of this. This is primarily due to changing requirements and a shortage of personnel in almost all specialties.

Professions are changing so rapidly that university education cannot catch up with them, say Kommersant FM’s interlocutors and add: the priority is with online learning. And now there is a trend towards mentoring, notes Natalya Vlodavskaya, director of client experience at the Skilbox educational platform:

“A category of people has emerged who want not just a mass product, but a personalized attitude from a teacher – individual consultations, personal lessons. Because of this, the course becomes on average 20% more expensive. High demand for areas: “games”, “programming” and “design”. The most popular courses are “Marketplace Manager”, “Python Developer” and “Graphic Designer”. Average checks – from 65 thousand rubles. up to 85 thousand rubles. These are longer programs, rates with increased attention from the teacher.”

As for the choice of educational courses during the January holidays, analytics has been added to programming and graphic design. The duration of such programs ranges from a week to two years. And most of the requests are for training “from scratch,” adds Ivan Chirkov, brand director of the educational platform “Netology”:

“Some people buy certificates at the end of the year in order to change their career path or learn a new profession. If this is a course that allows you to completely change your specialty, then it will cost from 70 thousand rubles. and up to 150 thousand rubles. And budgets for corporate education are gradually beginning to unfreeze. Employers understand that it is important to develop and retrain their employees. This allows them to save on hiring costs in the first place, as well as provide better career opportunities.”

The shortage of personnel has forced employers to hire people without experience and develop their own staff. Salaries have been growing throughout 2023, and companies no longer have the resources to raise them further. Therefore, many choose to train their own employees, emphasizes Natalya Tsarevskaya-Dyakina, director of the Edtech Hub of the Skolkovo Foundation:

“Professionals will regularly see their skills become obsolete at a rate of 10-16% per year, depending on the profession. They need to be replenished regularly. At some point, we will stop talking about separate training altogether. We will learn together with our career development.

Many companies whose activities are related to development have announced their own internal courses and even full-cycle academies with dozens of programs. Those companies that decided to take a less expensive path are now very interested in collaborations and joint programs with technology companies.”

Such collaborations guarantee internships and even employment, including in large corporations with state participation, Kommersant FM’s interlocutors claim. But the market needs not only programmers and developers. The main problem is the shortage of workers. According to various sources, Russia currently lacks about 5 million so-called blue collar workers. And educational platforms are already partnering with colleges. And from 2024 they plan to launch the theoretical part of working specialties online.
