Civilians at Azovstal were kept as a “human shield”. They were supposed to cover themselves from air strikes. Those who wanted to leave were shot. This was told by the captured Ukrainian militant Mikhail Shvets.
He added that at first the civilians were afraid to leave the plant. And then the Ukrainian military assessed the reliability of such a “human shield” and decided not to let people go. Moreover, civilians were additionally driven to Azovstal.
Another prisoner of war, sergeant Vitaliy Katranich, told how a man was shot in his presence. According to the militant, eight people over 30 were kept in the bunker. They decided to shoot one of them. Katranich did not name the reason.
Recall that Mariupol was completely liberated on May 20, 2022. By this time, all the underground facilities of the Azovstal plant, where the Ukrainian military were hiding, came under the control of the Russian army.
