Canada to stop roaming services for Russian Big Four subscribers

Cellular operators in Canada are terminating roaming agreements with Russian mobile operators, which previously fell under the sanctions of the Canadian government. “Big Four” of the Russian telecom operators hit under Canadian sanctions in July this year. The inclusion of companies in the list was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country Melanie Joly. A representative of Beeline then told Vedomosti that this would not affect the provision of services to customers.
According to an interlocutor in one of the companies, she received a notification about the termination of the service, then local operators “one by one” began to disconnect the operator from roaming. Other sources told RBC that this situation has become a precedent, since roaming relations in any country have not been broken off by all local operators at the same time.
In MegaFon, the publication confirmed receipt of a notification from Canadian operators. The representative of the Russian operator specified that communication is now available to subscribers who are roaming in Canada, customers are being informed about “alternative ways to stay in touch”. VimpelCom expects that in the near future all existing agreements will be suspended, and communication with the operator’s clients in Canada will be lost. They said RBCwho are looking for a way out.
At the same time, a representative of the Canadian telecommunications company Bell Canada Enterprises said that it continues to provide roaming services to the Russian operator Ekaterinburg-2000, which operates under the Motiv brand in the Sverdlovsk and Kurgan regions, as well as the Khanty-Mansiysk and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs. Roaming in Canada is currently used by about 10,000 subscribers of the largest Russian operators, one of the interlocutors of the publication said.
