Butterflies also fly south
[ad_1]
Not all fluttering beauties – butterflies – hide in autumn until spring, there are those that fly south like real migratory birds.
In autumn, many butterflies, such as the daytime peacock eye, as well as other insects, have already hidden in secluded places until spring. In natural areas, it is not pupae that winter, but adults of butterflies such as urticaria and lemongrass.
But there are those who have chosen a different way to survive the winter. They, like most birds, fly south. One of the representatives of migratory beauties is the admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) from the Nymphalidae family. The butterfly got its name because of the red-orange stripes on the wings. Admiral caterpillars grow on thistles, nettles or hops, hiding in a leaf rolled into a tube. Adult butterflies drink the nectar of cornflower, thistle and others. At the end of summer, they begin to use the juice of overripe fruits – pears or peaches.
Admirals travel alone, at speeds up to 15 km/h. They fly as far south as North Africa. Butterflies live there in winter, and when a dry summer sets in, they rush north. Here, in the north, including in the natural areas of Moscow, they lay their eggs, and in the second half of summer a new generation of butterflies appears. These beauties have a bright color and compare favorably with the rather faded colors of butterflies that arrived from the south. Therefore, if you meet an admiral’s butterfly with a dull color, know that you have a brave traveler who has traveled thousands of kilometers in front of you.
