Israel has a system of powerful pumps ready to flood Hamas tunnels under the Gaza Strip with sea water. But, according to The Wall Street Journal, a decision on such a step has not yet been made. The Israeli side does not have accurate cartography of the tunnels, as well as data on the soil. We talked about the consequences of flooding with hydraulic engineer, Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor of RUDN University Vladimir Tetelmin.
“There is an extensive network of tunnels running under the Gaza Strip, the length of which is measured in hundreds of kilometers. (According to various estimates, from 300 to 500 kilometers; for comparison, the length of all Moscow metro tunnels is about 460 kilometers. – Auth.), says Vladimir Tetelmin. — The tunnels under Gaza, purely theoretically, can be flooded. For this purpose, the Israelis, as they say, have prepared several high-capacity pumps. They plan to pump seawater into the tunnels over the course of several days. Unless, of course, Hamas fighters provide some countermeasures, which is not difficult to do.
The expert recalls how during the Great Patriotic War the Nazis tried to destroy the partisans who were hiding in the Adzhimushkai quarries within the boundaries of Kerch.
“The Germans blew up and blocked the entrances there, pumped smoke into the underground adits. As soon as this kind of action began, the partisans built a gas-tight wall. Hamas fighters can do the same now. They can build waterproof walls in the tunnels. Moreover, the cross-section of the tunnels under Gaza is approximately the size of a man.
The professor is confident that Hamas fighters have prepared enough materials in underground structures to build a waterproof barrier. You can, for example, use the same brickwork.
– They have mastered this technology. They put up a wall – that’s it, it doesn’t allow water to pass through.
Vladimir Tetelmin draws attention to the fact that Gaza’s water supply is largely established through wells.
— Aquifers lie quite close to the surface. If Israel decides to flood the tunnels under Gaza, salt water could enter these horizons. For many years, the water supply to this large agglomeration of two million with fresh water will be significantly hampered. This could be a big disaster.
According to the professor, if groundwater is contaminated, soil salinization may also occur. Farmers who grow various crops will suffer, and this could destroy their farms. Soil salinization may also affect parts of Israel where agriculture is developed.
The professor recalls that tunnels similar to the “Gaza metro” were built in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
“But in Vietnam there were jungles, in Afghanistan there were mountains, and in Gaza these catacombs were built right under the city, under residential areas. Tunnels cannot be blown up without collapsing buildings on the surface. Israel is hatching this project; if they decide to do it, they can make Gaza a mass grave.
The expert believes that flooding and blowing up tunnels under Gaza will not bring Israel’s victory closer. This way of fighting is inhumane.
The doctor of technical sciences notes that the Palestinians, if they controlled the relevant territory, could dig a canal through the entire territory of Gaza, connect the Mediterranean Sea with the Dead Sea, and then half of Israel would go under water. Because the surface of the Dead Sea is located 425 meters below sea level, in the lowest part of the El Ghor tectonic basin. This is the lowest place on Earth.
Naturally, in reality this is impossible.
