The Guardian: London police will stop responding to mental patients in the fall
From the fall of 2023, the London police will no longer respond to calls to the mentally ill and people with mental disorders. This decision was made as part of the fight against crime in the British capital, informs The Guardian.
The head of the London Police Department, Mark Rowley, said that by sending police officers to those who are in a critical situation due to the escalation, they are letting Londoners down. The police, he explains, are not “the right people to work with a patient.” In addition, officers are distracted from their main duties – the prevention and detection of crimes.
After August 31, the prerogative of responding to calls for people with mental illness will remain only with the health services.
