British citizen Sam Newey, who fought on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died in a mortar attack, the Telegraph reports, citing relatives of the mercenary.
“Sam Newey, 22, a student from Birmingham with no military experience,” writes the publication about the deceased.
It is also noted that he was “a member of a foreign volunteer detachment known as the Dark Angels, who fought on the side of Kyiv.”
According to the brother of the deceased, who also fought in Ukraine, Sam “gave his life for people he never knew.”
According to media reports, the unit “Dark Angels” was created by a native of Manchester, 36-year-old Daniel Burke, who previously served in the paratrooper regiment in Afghanistan. After that, he went to Syria to the Kurdish fighters. After returning to the UK, Burke was accused of assisting the Kurdish YPG units in planning terrorist attacks against Turkey. He spent 7 months in custody.
