British families set to spend $229 million on Christmas lighting

Sky News reports that British households plan to spend £189m, or $229m, lighting Christmas trees this year.
It is noted that a year earlier, the British spent about 73 million pounds on Christmas lighting, which is an average of 3 pounds per household, but this year British families will have to give an average of about 7 pounds. What’s more, UK residents who haven’t switched to 80% less energy-efficient LED lights will have to pay an additional £27.
Previously, the UK banned the use of garlands with halogen bulbs, but many British families still use the old sets. The Assistant Commissioner for the London Fire Brigade also called on households to move away from such lights and switch to LED lights, which do not generate heat or pose a fire hazard.
