Britain will supply Ukraine with tank shells with depleted uranium. This is stated in the response of the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Kingdom Annabelle Goldie to a request from a parliamentarian, drew attention of RIA Novosti.
6 March Member of the House of Lords Raymond Jolliffe requested through the website of the British Parliament, the government has information on whether any ammunition supplied to Ukraine contains depleted uranium.
“Along with providing Ukraine with a squadron of Challenger 2 main battle tanks, we will supply ammunition, including armor-piercing shells containing depleted uranium,” she said in a response.
These projectiles are highly effective against modern tanks and armored vehicles, Goldie added.
As the agency notes, depleted uranium shells are included in the ammunition of American Abrams tanks, they can also be used by German Leopard 2 and British Challenger 2. At the same time, experts emphasize that the uranium dust remaining after the use of shells is extremely toxic and is not subject to decontamination.
On January 30, training of Ukrainian troops began in the UK. Then the First Deputy Minister of Defense of the Kingdom, Alex Chuck, announced plans to supply Ukraine with Challenger 2 tanks at the end of March 2023. On February 8, Reuters, citing British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, reported that the Prime Minister’s office announced plans to expand assistance to the armed Ukrainian forces, including training for fighter pilots and marines.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to Kyiv. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, warned that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia. The Kremlin said that the Leopard and Abrams tanks would burn down the same way as the rest of Western military equipment.
