Alexandra van Heuffelen, State Secretary at the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Royal Affairs, said in a letter to Parliament that the country’s civil servants will soon no longer be able to use the TikTok app on their work mobile devices. It is reported that the corresponding decision was made by the government, taking into account the recommendation of the General Intelligence and Security Service.
In accordance with the decision, which was announced by van Heuffelen, at the first stage, today, civil servants are advised not to use TikTok. In the next step, officials’ office phones will be set by default to not install unapproved apps, and “the installation of apps that could be used for spying will become impossible.”
According to the Netherlands Broadcasting Corporation, citing government sources, the actual installation ban “will apply to the social network TikTok, owned by the Chinese technology company ByteDance.”
