Borrell calls Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan ‘normal and routine’

The head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell commented on the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. China has no reason to worry, he said.
“There is no reason to use the visit as a pretext for aggressive military activities in the Taiwan Strait. It is normal and routine for legislators from our countries to travel internationally.” wrote Borrell on Twitter. He also urged both sides to remain calm and exercise restraint.
Earlier, the European Commission called for reducing tensions around Taiwan through dialogue. They stressed that the European Union adheres to the “one China” policy, but at the same time “maintains friendly relations and close cooperation with the island.”
UN Secretary General António Guterres also commented on Pelosi’s trip. He also stated that the organization supports the “one China” principle.
The Russian authorities called the visit of the American politician “a pure provocation.” This statement was made by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov. According to him, the Kremlin believes that no political goals “can be achieved by such provocative steps.”
The US actions were also condemned by the Russian Foreign Ministry. Later, Pelosi’s trip was commented on by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to him, by such actions the United States wants to prove to the whole world its impunity.
On August 2, Nancy Pelosi flew to Taiwan despite warnings from the Chinese authorities. She stated that her visit to the island is a testament to US support for democracy in Taiwan. John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the White House National Security Council, stressed that the politician’s visit does not contradict the “one China” principle that the US authorities adhere to.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in turn, strongly protested the arrival of Pelosi. And later it became known that the Chinese army will conduct combat exercises in six regions surrounding Taiwan. On August 3, Pelosi left the island nation.
