Borrell called the situation around the ZNPP “extremely difficult”

EU diplomat Josep Borrell commented the current situation around the Zaporozhye NPP on his Twitter, calling it “extremely alarming”. He also recalled the need to allow experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to enter the facility.

“The situation around the Zaporozhye NPP remains extremely alarming. Russia must ensure that damaged lines can be repaired without hindrance and fully reconnected to the Ukrainian electricity grid. IAEA experts should finally be able to visit the facility,” the statement said.

On the eve of “Energoatom” announced the first ever disconnection from the power grid of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. The reason was fires at ash dumps on the territory of the Zaporizhzhya TPP, which is located next to the nuclear power plant. According to the company, the station is still disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid.

During the special operation, the Russian army took control of a part of the Zaporozhye region of Ukraine, including Enerhodar, where the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the ZNPP, is located. Now the Armed Forces of Ukraine are regularly shelling Energodar, the surrounding villages and the territory of the ZNPP adjacent to the city.

In this regard, the Council of the State Duma of the Russian Federation called on the UN and the IAEA to demand that Kyiv immediately stop shelling the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. It is assumed that the IAEA mission can arrive at the ZNPP before September 5, it will include representatives of security agencies and officials responsible for accounting for nuclear materials at the facility, which will allow for an examination of the shelling of the station.

The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, also said today that the presence of the organization’s experts at the Zaporozhye NPP could become permanent. He noted the complexity of the mission. According to him, the arrival of experts to the station through the war zone is not so easy to implement. Grossi added that it is necessary to choose a safe route and get support from the UN, which will help the experts get to the ZNPP.
