The semi-finals of the men’s table in Cincinnati saw the outsiders, with regard to the classification, thwart the forecasts, on the night of Saturday to Sunday. Borna Coric, 152nd at ATP, first clearly dominated Cameron Norrie, 11th (6-3, 6-4) then Stefanos Tsitsipas, 7th, brought down world number 1, Daniil Medvedev (7-6 [6]3-6, 6-3).
Moved to the Granstand following the long rain breaks which turned the day’s program upside down, the meeting between Coric and Norrie saw the Croatian win quite easily. The 25-year-old thus becomes the lowest ranked player in the history of the tournament to reach the final.
Operated on his right shoulder in May 2021 and absent from the circuit for a year, the former 12th in the world will play the second Masters 1000 final of his career on Sunday, almost four years after the first, in Shanghai in 2018 (defeat against Novak Djokovic).
“I’ve worked really, really hard over the past six months.he commented. When I fell back to the 200th place in the world (278th at the lowest last May), I knew I had to work three times harder than before and I did. I stayed calm even when I was losing and not playing good tennis. There were times when it was really not good, you know… That was the key. And, besides that, you have to have a little luck. But luck happens. That’s what I did this week. »
