Yury Borisov, Director General of the Roscosmos State Corporation, held a meeting at NPO Lavochkina, the lead developer of the Luna-25 automatic interplanetary station. How reported the press service of Roscosmos, Mr. Borisov discussed with the employees of the enterprise the reasons for the “unfinished mission” of Luna-25 and the prospects for the development of the Russian lunar program.
According to Mr. Borisov, the fact that the Luna-25 station collided with the surface of the Earth’s satellite “does not stop” the prospects for Russian exploration of the Moon. “There is no need to make a tragedy out of this, we need to draw conclusions and continue working in this direction,” he said.
The general director of Roskosmos stressed that Russian designers and scientists are “burning with the idea of continuing the lunar project.” According to him, one of the options for continuing the program could be the possibility of repeating the mission to land on the South Pole of the Moon in 2025 or 2026.
On August 11, Russia attempted to land on the station for the first time in almost 50 years. The Luna-25 station was launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Amur Region. It was supposed to land in the south polar region of the Moon on August 21. However, on August 20, the state corporation Roscosmos reportedthat “Luna-25” collided with the surface of the Earth’s satellite. According to Yuri Boris, the collapse of the station occurred after the engine didn’t pass out nominally and worked for 127 seconds instead of 84.
