Borisov: ISS operation is coming to an end

The International Space Station (ISS) is approaching the end of its operation. This was stated by the head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, in an interview with the Rossiya-24 TV channel.
“You know that the International Space Station is already approaching the end of its existence. <…> Unfortunately, it has already exceeded all permissible lifespans,” he said (quote according to TASS).
According to Borisov, 80% of Russian equipment on the ISS is beyond the warranty period.
On October 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting on the development of the space industry. It also discussed the creation of the Russian Orbital Station (ROS). Putin called it “Russia’s outpost for exploring and conquering the Universe.” He also called for decisions on this project to be made quickly.
Later Borisov reported, that Roscosmos has been instructed to approve the project for creating the ROS. According to him, funding has been allocated for the project. Earlier, Interfax wrote that the preliminary cost of building a new space station was estimated at 600 billion rubles. The exact amount will be announced after the completion of the preliminary design. The state corporation showed the layout of the ROS at the Army 2022 forum.
Back in July 2022, Borisov reported to the president about Roscosmos’ plans to withdraw from the ISS project and the development of ROS. Its construction planned for 2027–2032 Borisov previously said that Russia should withdraw from the ISS project at the moment when the deployment of ROS begins. In October he clarifiedthat the participation of the Russian Federation in the ISS project after 2028 will depend on the technical condition of the station.
