From the window of the editorial office of Moskovskaya Pravda, the native district of the king of the ring is clearly visible, because he grew up on Krasnaya Presnya. While still a schoolboy, he hung three hand-written posters on the wall of his room: “Work created man”, “Forever hope and never give up”, “We must!!!”. And he followed these commandments throughout his boxing career, which he started late by today’s standards – at the age of 17. But already at 19 he became the champion of Moscow, having fulfilled the standard of a master of sports.
Failure in 1960 at the Olympics in Rome, where Lagutin lost in the semifinals and became only a bronze medalist, did not break the athlete psychologically. And at the next Games in Tokyo and Rome, he climbed to the top step of the podium.
Boris Nikolaevich did a lot not only for boxing, heading the federation of the USSR. He was one of those whose efforts revived the voluntary sports society “Spartak”. He created the Health and Sports Foundation, worked for the benefit of the Moscow Federation of the Disabled – you can list a lot of things. Lagutin was diverse in the ring – and in life he remained the same.
