Bogomolov will leave the “Ideal Husband” without creeds

Director Konstantin Bogomolov decided to make changes to his play “Ideal Husband” and remove the “creed”. According to him, “the path he traveled” led him to this decision, and not the complaints of “religious” activists “”.
“Moments connected with the symbols of faith will leave the performance. With great symbols of suffering and redemption. And I regret that these moments could bring pain and experiences to truly believing people. Not loud and aggressive activists, but people for whom faith is a personal choice and a personal path… often loving modern theater and modern culture,” Bogomolov wrote on Instagram (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned).
He also added that he admits that the cross, which “became the subject of the game,” could hurt some viewers.
According to the director, the changes in the play, which has been going on for 10 years, arose because of “the path he has traveled.” Mr. Bogomolov specified that he was never worried about “aggressive speeches by ignorant religious “activists”” who tried to disrupt the screening of “Ideal Husband”.
The play “An Ideal Husband”, one of the most scandalous Russian productions, has been staged at the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater since 2013. Mr. Bogomolov calls this performance a “fantasy” based on the work of Oscar Wilde. The production highlights the themes of homosexuality and drugs.
In September 2021, the management of the Moscow Art Theater decided to remove Konstantin Bogomolov’s performances The Ideal Husband and The Karamazovs from the repertoire. But after Konstantin Khabensky became the artistic director of the theater, the performances were resumed.
