How writes “Championship”, at one of the sections the athletes began to fall and crash into each other. According to preliminary data, nine athletes were hospitalized by ambulance, and the victims suffered, among other things, open fractures of their limbs. Eyewitnesses reported that some of the injured girls had facial injuries.
Another 15 skiers dropped out of the race. The race was stopped.
Eyewitness footage captured the moment of the collapse: in poor visibility conditions, skiers enter an open area at high speed and begin to fall; those walking behind do not have time to brake and crash into those who have fallen; screams are heard.
According to reports, a retrac was driven across the course prior to the race, which may have left the track surface covered in icy particles. At the same time, the head of the Russian Ski Federation Elena Vyalbe stated “Sport-Express”, which considers the athletes themselves to be to blame for the incident and assesses their level of training as very low.
“It’s okay, Lord,” said Vyalbe. “The thing is that these athletes are not even ready for such a track.”
