US Secretary of State Blinken discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov the detention of American journalist Gershkovich
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that today US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the Secretary of State called to discuss the detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Russia.
“In a conversation with Blinken, Lavrov stressed the inadmissibility of Washington whipping up a stir around the detention of Gershkovich,” the Russian Foreign Ministry notes.
Lavrov also noted that the US Embassy in Moscow was notified of Gershkovich’s detention in the prescribed manner.
Lavrov added that Gershkovich tried to collect information constituting a state secret. He asked the United States to respect the decisions of the Russian authorities and stressed that the fate of the detainee would be determined by the court.
In turn, the US State Department said that Blinken demanded the release of the American journalist during this conversation.
