British astronomers have found the largest black hole known to mankind
Astronomers from the British Durham University, with the support of the UK Space Agency, the Royal Society, the British Council for Science and Technology and the European Research Council, have discovered a supermassive black hole. It is about 33 times the mass of the Sun.
The lead author of the study, physicist James Nightingale, stressed that this is the most massive black hole known to science. Probably, its mass is theoretically an upper limit on the size of black holes. He called the discovery “extremely exciting”.
The authors of the study believe that the results of their work open up new opportunities for other astronomers.
The day before, scientists from the Royal Astronomical Society reportedthat they found a supermassive black hole that is currently facing the solar system. It is separated from the Earth by 657 million light years.
