The “Payment with a Smile” service from Sber may confuse the twins. For the first time, a resident of St. Petersburg encountered such a situation. He made purchases using biometrics at the Pyaterochka store, Fontanka writes. At the same time, the man did not transfer his data to Sber, but his twin brother did. Details – at Alexander Mezentsev.
At the end of August, Alexey, a resident of St. Petersburg, accidentally clicked on the “Pay with a smile” icon at the self-service checkout in a supermarket. The camera showed his image on the screen, and he instinctively smiled. Imagine his surprise when a message appeared that the purchase had been paid for, because the man not only did not submit biometrics to Sber, but in principle did not know what this function was. It turned out that the option was activated by his twin brother Alexander, who lives in Anapa. And the bank wrote off the money from his card. Such a service is alarming, since there are still external differences between the brothers, says Alexey:
“We, let’s say, are not 100% similar to each other, not like two peas in a pod. We can be distinguished, especially when we stand next to each other. There are a lot of people similar to each other. It is not entirely clear how such systems will work. Let’s just say that I definitely have no desire to use such services yet. At the moment it just makes me wonder.”
To check whether the payment system had made a mistake, Alexey conducted a similar experiment several more times. Just in case, he took inexpensive goods from the shelves so that a lot of money would not be debited from his brother’s card. As a result, each time the purchases were paid for with the help of a smile and someone else’s bank account.
Sber itself warns: if a user is very similar to a brother or sister, the system will not allow you to register a biometric template twice. But if you regularly pay for purchases instead of a relative, the bank may disable this function. It is almost impossible to insure against such a system error, says Alexey Titov, CEO of Intems:
“If for people who know about the presence of similar relatives, it is still possible to come up with some kind of additional identification, then with those who do not know, this is generally impossible. The idea of paying for purchases using a biometric sign is not new. For example, Amazon is actively boosting its biometrics system. But they don’t use it. They use the venous pattern of the arm, also because it is virtually impossible to remove it without being noticed.”
However, there is no such function in Sberbank yet. According to various estimates, there are now more than one and a half million pairs of twins living in Russia. And they may encounter similar problems not only in banking, but also in other biometric systems.
To secure their finances, it is better for the twins to use the traditional payment method, says information technology expert Sergei Kuleshov:
“Of course, classical systems are more reliable, especially when it comes to an unintentional error. We are now faced with new technology, and it is obvious that some minor troubles will arise. Perhaps we will never be able to solve them, or we will go through additional verification. The very codes we are talking about are not just that, but just to ensure one hundred percent reliability.”
Similar oddities can arise in the Moscow metro. In early August, the company filed an application to register the Vzglyad brand for biometrics and fare payment systems.
