Biologists reveal the secret of cats' love for fish

A group of scientists from the UK concluded that fish is one of the favorite treats of cats, as it has the “right” taste for the receptor of these animals.

Biologists have found that cats (unlike, including dogs) do not feel sweet taste and perceive bitter taste much weaker. At the same time, cats feel the “fifth taste”, umami, but perceive it differently than humans. This makes them particularly tasty combination of histidine and inosine monophosphate – substances found in fish and especially in tuna.

The results were reported in the journal Chemical Senses.
