US President Joe Biden announced that his country is ready to destroy all remnants of chemical weapons by autumn.
He stated that “the US is leading by example” with this work. In February, Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins said the US intended to complete the process of destroying all of its chemical weapons in the spring.
Biden said that the United States intends to continue to support the OPCW’s efforts to prevent the accumulation, production and use of chemical weapons around the world. Earlier in May, the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Fernando Arias, said that the remaining share of declared chemical weapons in the United States would be destroyed within a few weeks.
In March, the Russian embassy in the United States urged the US authorities to complete the destruction of chemical weapons. The United States is the only signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention that still has chemical warfare agents in service. In Russia, chemical weapons were completely destroyed in 2017.
