The Belizean government has announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel due to violations of international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip. The measures taken by the Foreign Ministry include revoking the ambassador’s accreditation and temporarily suspending the Israeli honorary consulate in the country.
According to the Government of Belize, since October 7, 2023, Israel has systematically violated international law, international humanitarian law and the human rights of the people of Gaza. Repeated calls for Israel to enforce a ceasefire and ensure unimpeded access to humanitarian aid in Gaza fell on deaf ears, prompting the decision to sever relations.
This is not the first time countries have taken similar measures in response to Israeli actions in Gaza. Earlier, Chile and Colombia announced the recall of their ambassadors for consultations, and Bolivia decided to sever diplomatic relations with Israel due to its “aggressive” actions in the region.
