Belgian regulators said they will study the potential harm to user health from the iPhone 12 due to its exceeding radiation levels. According to Reutersthis announcement was preceded by a decision by French regulators to remove the iPhone 12 from sale in the country on the grounds that the model’s radiation levels exceeded the country’s regulations.

The French National Frequency Agency conducted two studies that showed that the iPhone 12 has an electromagnetic energy absorption rate of 5.74 W/kg (in contact with hands or head). In France, there is a standard according to which this indicator, indicating how much radiation affects human tissue per second, should not exceed 4 W/kg. Apple was asked to fix this problem, but for now sales of this model in the country have been suspended.

In Belgium, the Minister for Digitalization, Mathieu Michel, said it was his “duty to ensure that citizens are not at risk.” Therefore, the minister turned to Belgian regulators with a request to check the potential risks from using the iPhone 12. Apple itself insists on the safety of this model. According to the company, since its launch in 2020, this model has already undergone numerous tests by various international organizations and has been approved as compliant with radiation standards. However, these standards differ in different countries. Thus, in the UK, no complaints arose against Apple, since the radiation level of the iPhone 12 does not exceed current standards. In Spain, the consumer protection organization OCU called on the authorities to follow the example of France and suspend sales of the iPhone 12 until the circumstances are fully clarified. In the Netherlands, regulators also reported that they were currently reviewing the radiation levels of the iPhone 12, but noted that “there is no urgent threat.”
