Barcelona squeeze out Frenkie de Jong drop by drop

Before the start of the Spanish championship, the most protracted transfer drama of this summer, the main character of which was the Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, was not resolved. The Dutch footballer still does not intend to make concessions to the management of the Catalan club, which has delivered a tough ultimatum to the player: either agree to a salary cut (it will be more than €22 million next season) by half, or leave the team.
Barcelona decided to take such a step because of the difficulties associated with the inability to sign the players bought this summer. The Catalans, in order to attract new players and not violate the tough financial rules of the Spanish championship, must urgently cut costs. And above all by reducing the salaries of team members. However, if, for example, Gerard Pique almost immediately agreed to revise his contract downwards, then de Jong, whose agreement with Barcelona runs until 2026, protested.
In fact, at least two clubs have already shown interest in Frenkie de Jong – Manchester United, which offered € 75 million for the defender plus € 10 million in bonuses, as well as London Chelsea. But the Dutchman does not intend to consider the option of moving to another team: as part of Barcelona, de Jong, according to him, will fight for the main trophies, while Manchester United, which is rebuilding, has not qualified for the Champions League.
Barcelona, however, hope to force the player to leave with additional leverage. The club’s management told the Dutchman that they could cancel the contract, as the law was allegedly violated when it was extended in 2020. The Catalans, according to The Athletic, threatened de Jong with legal proceedings if he did not compromise.
