Baltic countries propose to include measures in the field of trade in the eighth package of sanctions

The Baltic States have proposed to the European Commission (EC) to include trade and energy measures in the eighth package of EU sanctions against Russia. Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu stated this in an interview with Die Welt.
The Estonian Foreign Ministry clarified that the new restrictions will also affect SWIFT. In addition, among the proposals is to expand the list of individuals and legal entities that fall under EU sanctions. According to Reinsalu, the Baltic countries want the eighth package of sanctions to be introduced “as soon as possible.”
“We have already submitted specific proposals on this issue to the Commission. We are talking about energy, trade, further restrictions on the SWIFT system, as well as adding even more people and organizations to the sanctions lists,” the minister said.
According to Reinsalu, the previous sanctions are effective, but they are still not enough. He also said that Western countries should supply Ukraine with even more weapons.
Estonia announced proposals for the eighth package of sanctions on 19 August. Then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic reported that the measures would include restrictions in the economic, energy and trade sectors. After that, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the country does not intend to support energy sanctions against Russia. “We don’t even want to negotiate energy sanctions,” Szijjártó said.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against the country. In early June, the EU countries introduced the sixth package of sanctions, which included an embargo on offshore oil supplies from Russia. And in July, the seventh package of sanctions was adopted, which includes an embargo on Russian gold and jewelry.
