The richest woman in Russia, entrepreneur Tatyana Bakalchuk, criticized the idea, often expressed recently by government officials, according to which Russian women should first start a family and children, and only after that, perhaps, get an education and build a career.
How write Vedomosti, Bakalchuk spoke at a business forum and took part in a discussion on this topic. She expressed the opinion that if a girl wants to make family a priority, then that is good, but the decision should be made voluntarily.
“To impose a stereotype that she should do this is wrong,” Bakalchuk said.
She noted that she refuses to “impose the idea of ‘marriage and children first, then a career’,” and also believes that in the modern economy, women have the opportunity to combine work and family – for example, by working remotely or running their own business.
“I will not recommend my three daughters to get married,” Bakalchuk added, “before they get on their feet.”
In October, former children’s ombudsman and State Duma vice speaker Anna Kuznetsova said that Russians should start giving birth at the age of about 20, so that the family eventually has time to have “three, four or more children.” Later, State Duma deputy Dmitry Vyatkin called for changing the education system in Russia, giving preference to “3+1 vocational education” so that young people start working and having children earlier. Receiving higher and subsequent education, according to the deputy, leads to the fact that “our kids” take too long to study “instead of taking responsibility, earning money, starting a family.”
The other day, a member of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Margarita Pavlova, said that “we need to stop encouraging girls to get higher education,” because “the search for oneself is delayed” and as a result, “the reproductive function is missed.”
