Italian Francesco Bagnaia, Fabio Quartararo’s rival for the MotoGP world title, will start from 4th place at best on Sunday on the starting grid of the San Marino Grand Prix after a sanction received on Friday after the first free practice session .

The Ducati rider received a three-place grid penalty for slowing down and hindering another rider, Alex Marquez (Honda-LCR), the organizers announced. He will therefore start fourth at best, if he finishes first in qualifying on Saturday.

“Pecco” Bagnaia, third in the world ranking, is aiming at the Misano circuit for a fourth victory in a row, after his successes in the Netherlands, Great Britain and Austria, to try to get closer to the leader, the defending champion French Fabio Quatararo.

The Niçois currently has a 32-point lead over the Spaniard Aleix Espargaro and 44 over the Italian before this 14th round of the championship.

Quartararo (Yamaha) meanwhile made a perfect debut on the Misano circuit by setting the fastest time in the first free practice session on Friday morning. The second session is scheduled for the beginning of the afternoon.
