The head of the IOC Bach supported the idea of the G7 for the participation of Russian athletes in international tournaments
The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, hoped that the countries that are in favor of a ban on the participation of athletes from Russia in international tournaments will listen to the G7.
“The IOC warmly welcomes the G7’s support for the autonomy of sports and the IOC’s recommendation that athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport only participate (in tournaments) as individual neutral athletes,” Bach said.
The head of the IOC thanked the leaders of the G7 for such a statement.
Bach also added that if countries heed the G7’s statement, then international sport could again fulfill the mission of uniting the world in various competitions.
During the G7 summit, the leaders of the participating countries stated that they respect the independence of sports organizations, but still aim to prevent athletes from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus from participating in competitions as representatives of countries.
