Latest Sightings: A buffalo with bear claws was born in South Africa
In South Africa, safari enthusiast Pam Bruce-Brand discovered a buffalo with unusually thick legs and bear claws. She shared her impressions with Latest Sightings.
In the Kruger National Park, she met a herd of buffalo going to the watering hole. Among the many old and young buffaloes, the woman noticed a calf that “looked a little strange.”
She saw that the buffalo had bear claws instead of hooves and thick legs. This, as explained, may be due to a nutritional deficiency or a genetic mutation (hyperkeratosis – thickening of the stratum corneum of the epithelium). Moreover, hoof problems can lead to lameness.
Bruce-Brand observed and photographed the unusual “strange-walking” calf for some time. “He looked as happy as his siblings,” she concluded. “And he acted like he was okay.”
