The Yekaterinburg hockey club Avtomobilist finished the 2022/2023 season, having lost in the decisive match of the first round of the Gagarin Cup playoffs to Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
The fate of the series was decided in the seventh match, which took place in Yekaterinburg. Already in the sixth minute of the meeting, Nikita Korostelev brought the “guests” forward. At the very end of the first period, Avtomobilist earned the right to shootout. Georgy Belousov undertook to take a free kick, but could not beat Edward Pasquale.
In the second period, the “owners” managed to turn the game around. In the 23rd minute, Nick Ebert equalized the score, and in the 32nd minute, Avtomobilist captain Sergey Shirokov put Yekaterinburgers ahead.
At the beginning of the third period, Alexey Makeev increased the difference in the score, but the “chauffeurs” failed to keep the advantage. In the 54th minute Denis Zernov closed the gap, and two minutes later Egor Yakovlev made the score equal – 3:3.
The outcome of the meeting and the whole series was decided in the ninth minute of the “endless” overtime. First, Curtis Volk hit the Metallurg goal post, and just 27 seconds later, Nikolai Goldobin scored the golden goal. 4:3 in the match and the series – Metallurg goes next.
