Rhythmic gymnastics stars sisters Diana and Arina Averina decided not to go to the 2024 Olympics in Paris in a neutral status. Thus, the titled athletes supported the decision of the President of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics (VFKhG) Irina Viner, who spoke categorically on this matter the day before.
The Averina sisters have already performed in neutral status at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and at the World Championships in 2021. However, athletes “don’t really want to perform in this format anymore,” quotes the words of rhythmic gymnastics stars portal Sport24.
“We knew Irina Alexandrovna’s position [Винер] regarding the anthem and flag, there was no special reaction, they were not surprised,” the Averins noted, adding that they fully support the position of their coach.
Previously “MK” told, that Irina Viner considered the requirements of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the admission of athletes from Russia to be humiliating. “Until recently, we in Europe could only claim one place at the Olympics,” she emphasized. – But why is it needed? It will be a shame if we go there…” According to the head of the WFHG, such a situation will be humiliating for Russia, so representatives of rhythmic gymnastics will not be in Paris at the Olympics without the country’s symbols. It is already known that Irina Viner’s decision to enter a team for the 2024 Games supported award-winning figure skating coach Tatyana Tarasova.
