A court in the Maldives found former President Abdullah Yameen guilty of bribery and money laundering. Now he faces 11 years in prison, according to the local publication Avas.
The judge in his verdict found him guilty on the charges, informs the publication.
The ex-president was accused of depositing money from the sale of Aara Island into his personal account and “laundering” the funds. Also added to the charges was the receipt of a one million dollar bribe from ex-MP Nayem.
The prosecutor’s office demands the maximum sentence for Yamin – 11 years in prison, arguing that he was in office at the time of the crime, which he considers an aggravating circumstance.
Abdullah Yameen was already sentenced to five years in prison in 2019 on similar charges. However, in November last year, the Supreme Court of the Maldives overturned the earlier prison term.
