Due to an unexpected magnetic storm, auroras may be visible in the latitudes of Moscow and St. Petersburg. This was reported on Sunday at the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
They noted that the magnetic storm was unexpected. The forecasts of most of the world’s scientific centers assumed only weak disturbances, which were not even reflected in the graphs. The storm’s strength is currently estimated at about 1.5 on a scale of five. The duration of the storm, according to scientists, could be from three to six hours.
“In the next hour, a band of auroras is expected to form in the Siberian region at latitudes of 65 degrees and higher. In the period from 20 to 24 hours, the band of auroras will be shifted to the European part of Russia,” the laboratory reported, adding that during this time interval the band of auroras can reach the latitudes of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
