Astrophysicists have recorded a powerful magnetic storm: auroras are possible in Moscow

The geomagnetic storm became the strongest in several years

According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy and Heliophysical Instrumentation of IKI RAS and ISTP SB RAS, on March 23, a magnetic storm began on Earth, the power of which on March 24 approached the G4 category (a very strong geomagnetic storm). This is a record level for several years.

Auroras have already been reported at latitudes of 65 degrees and above, and with such a power of a magnetic storm, they can be seen at latitudes of about 45-50 degrees, that is, even in Moscow.

Also, the flow of the solar wind into which the Earth has fallen can cause interruptions in satellite navigation and HF radio communications, false alarms of protection systems in power supply networks and an increase in the demolition of spacecraft from orbit.

How reported, the solar wind rarely leads to magnetic storms of this magnitude. Most likely, they will not become even more powerful, because they are caused by a coronal hole, not a solar flare.

The geomagnetic storm has been going on for 17 hours and is expected to occur intermittently for 2-3 days.
