Prada will create spacesuits for flights to the Moon: the American company Axiom Space announced a partnership with the brand. Its Artemis III mission will land astronauts on the surface of Earth’s natural satellite. It is noted that the Prada spacesuit will be developed on the basis of an existing NASA protective suit, but will make it more flexible and protected. Engineers and modelers will work together at all stages of the project.
How beneficial is such cooperation for Prada? And should we expect similar steps from other luxury brands? The CEO of the Fashion Consulting Group agency, Anna Lebsak-Kleymans, believes that the example of an Italian fashion house can be contagious for the industry:
“Prada is a brand that does not sit on one commercial concept from season to season, but is constantly evolving.
This kind of collaboration puts the fashion house in a completely different category; they are entering the territory of tech brands.
In addition, such special projects then live endlessly, it will be in museum exhibitions and on the pages of textbooks. That is, this means not only a PR effect, but also ambitions to leave a mark in this world.
At the same time, Prada has a youth line, for which they are already using advanced technologies for yachting and sailing. In general, in the fashion world there is a separate category of tech companies – Stone Island, North Face, CP Company, Patagonia, Adidas, which are engaged not only and not so much in design, but in the development of textiles or clothing with added functions that allow people to survive in extreme situations.
Clothes for astronauts, in particular, were made by Under Armor. Columbia dealt with technical fabrics for launch vehicles, skins, and so on.
We can say that technology is now the engine of the fashion industry. I am sure that brands will pay attention to such a step. Cooperation will not be limited, for example, only to Formula 1. For example, technology is always an Olympic form. In America it is done by Ralph Lauren. Louis Vuitton will create kits for the French for the next Olympics, and the Uniqlo brand will create kits for Sweden.”
As Axiom Space stated, they were interested in the Italian fashion house’s experience in the field of raw materials, production technologies and innovative design concepts. However, most likely, Prada will only be responsible for the decorative elements of the spacesuit, believes cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, who flew to the ISS four times:
“The design of Russian spacesuits differs from American ones, and there are suits that are used inside the ship, they depend on all the systems that are there: oxygen, air, communications. There are models for spacewalks, that is, these are mini-spaceships, and there are versions for landing on the Moon or Mars.
Astronauts, in principle, do not care at all what the spacesuits look like, the main thing is that they are functional, soft and comfortable.
Axiom Space is a commercial company that provides flights for tourists. Naturally, billionaires who pay huge amounts of money to fly want to look good.
Therefore, I think Prada will simply make some kind of design for the outer shell, some kind of tourist version of a spacesuit.
As for the appearance of astronauts, they are also given watches intended for flights; they can also wear their own. You can also take a wedding ring and glasses in a case. If we talk about clothes, then some T-shirts are also allowed. The main thing is that the materials do not have a strong smell, and are made of normal, high-quality material.
For example, when they were filming the film “Challenge,” director Klim Shipenko was allowed to take a T-shirt with him, which he always puts on on the first day of filming all of his films – he has such a tradition.
These things are brought in 30 days in advance, no later than, they are checked, then they are handed over to an epidemiologist, who is responsible for ensuring that they continue to be disinfected. Afterwards they are placed in special bags and five days before the launch they are put into the ship where the crew is located.”
Until now, space tourists have only been sent to the ISS. NASA expects that they will be able to fly to the Moon at the end of 2025 or 2026.
