American astronaut Thomas Stafford, who commanded the Apollo spacecraft that made its historic docking with the Soviet Soyuz 19 in 1975, has died at the age of 93. NASA reported this.
“Today, General Tom Stafford departed for the eternal skies he so bravely explored as an astronaut on the Gemini and Apollo missions, and as a peacekeeper on the Apollo-Soyuz mission,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said on social media. X.
Stafford commanded Apollo 10 in May 1969 during the “dress rehearsal” for the mission to the Moon. In July 1975, he led Apollo, which made the first international space flight and docked with the Soviet Soyuz 19. In April 2018, Stafford was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship.
