According to RIA Novosti, Archpriest Kalinin, who was banned from serving, ended up with a heart attack in a hospital in Moscow, where he will stay at least until the morning.
Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill dismissed the 54-year-old archpriest from office because of his “obstruction to bringing” the icon “Holy Trinity” by Andrei Rublev to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
On May 15, the Russian Orthodox Church announced that President Vladimir Putin had decided to return the Holy Trinity Church, which was located in the Tretyakov Gallery. Leonid Kalinin, former head of the expert council on church art and restoration of the Russian Orthodox Church, supported art critics who feared the icon would be safe during its transportation. He suggested creating a special protective capsule to avoid damage to the icon.
Commenting on the decision of Patriarch Kirill to remove him from office, Kalinin admitted that he may have made a mistake, but considers this decision well thought out. He stated that his further action would depend on the decisions of the patriarch.
