Archaeologists have found the seal of the mayor of Jerusalem from the era of the First Temple
Israeli archaeologists excavating the Western Wall square in Jerusalem have discovered a seal measuring 13 x 14 millimeters made of baked clay, reports heritagedaily.com.
The seal was dated to the period of the 7th-6th centuries. BC, that is, as archaeologists suggest, it dates back to the era of the First Temple, or the Temple of Solomon.
The seal depicts two figures facing each other and bears an inscription in Hebrew that reads, “Belongs to the ruler of the city.”
Archaeologists said that the existence of the title of mayor was known from the Bible and extra-biblical sources. The seal was the first discovery of its kind in an official excavation.
