Apple warned users about a large-scale hacker attack

The Cupertino corporation sent out a warning to residents from 92 countries, writes Reuters. Apple warns that a request to verify your Apple ID account appears on your smartphone screen. However, the account for which you are asked to enter a password is attached to an unfamiliar email. Moreover, the address is not repeated among different iPhone owners, writes the specialized website IXBT.com.
This type of scheme by cybercriminals is not new at all, notes Luka Safonov, CEO of the Cyberpolygon company: “This has been used almost since the introduction of fraudulent schemes, primarily in email and then in many accounts on a mobile phone, the architecture of which is customized for the user.
Cloud storage may contain contacts and a lot of other information, which is a tasty morsel for attackers. As for the mailing, I think that it is most likely related to the attack. A vulnerability was identified in the service that allows you to cause a massive password reset, influence accounts following the link, or perform some actions that were sent to users in this mailing.”
Russian operators also began warning citizens about the danger. In particular, Beeline recommended not to click on a pop-up notification asking you to enter a password. And if the user is nevertheless attacked by scammers, he is offered to call the company’s call center. There are several more ways to protect your data, says independent information security expert Yakov Grodzensky: “It all looks very strange. Because, as a rule, hackers extort personal data of those people who are directly attacked. They may be requesting information about those accounts that were logged in to this device other than the user himself.
In any case, as a general recommendation, we can say that there is no need to open anything. It is advisable not to follow links, open received files or enter any data. Among other things, I would recommend activating Lockdown Mode.
It is available on iPhone and Mac, which allows you to work with devices in the most secure mode. The mode blocks messages, notifications, and so on. It’s worth activating Lockdown Mode for at least a week to protect yourself from losing confidential information.”
Since 2021, Apple has warned about such threats several times a year, according to an official notice on the company’s website. It clarifies that in total the corporation sent such mailings to users from more than 150 countries.
