Rhythmic gymnastics coach Emanuela Maccarani and her Russian assistant Olga Tishina will appear before the Italian sports court. They are accused of using brutal training methods on young athletes, ANSA reports.
Coaches are said to have applied “psychological pressure” that “provoked nutritional and psychological disorders in some gymnasts.”
The Brescia prosecutor’s office launched an investigation after the mother of two former athletes complained about the alleged psychological abuse of girls by coaches because of “their weight and appearance.”
Several Italian gymnasts, including world and European champions, spoke last year about cases of abuse, psychological abuse by the coaching staff. Athletes, according to them, suffered from an eating disorder due to the abuse of laxatives.
In November last year, the Italian Gymnastics Federation joined the investigation by the prosecutor’s office in connection with publications on this topic.
