Russian tennis players won the opening round of the third Grand Slam tournament – the British Open.

In the opening match of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, Russian Andrey Rublev defeated Australian tennis players Max Purcell in three sets – 6:3, 7:5, 6:4, and Veronika defeated Kaya Kanepi from Estonia in two sets – 7:6, 6:4 .

The Russian, seeded at the British Open under the seventh number, confidently began his journey in the main grass tournament of the season. In the first round, in just 1 hour and 33 minutes, he defeated the representative of the Green Continent, Max Purcell.

“I am very happy to be back after a two-year hiatus, and competing at Wimbledon is a special feeling. Of course, you always want to win all the sets in a row, doing it in the simplest way, but, obviously, this does not happen.

Today I was 5-2 down in the second set and I was lucky to be able to come back because in my head I was already preparing for the third set.

But I made some good innings, I was able to bounce back and had a really good third set, ”Rublev commented on his victory.

Also, Veronika Kudermetova made her way to the second round of the women’s singles, beating Estonian Kaya Kanepi.

The match lasted 1 hour 44 minutes and ended with the score 7:6 (7:4), 6:4. Kudermetova made fourteen aces per game, made one double fault and converted one of 7 break points. Kanepi has three aces, three double faults and zero out of 3 realized break points.

In the second round, Kudermetova will play with the winner of the meeting between Market Vondrousov (Czech Republic) and Peyton Stearns (USA).

Unfortunately, the first day was not without losses.
