Foreign agent Andrei Kuraev announced his restoration to the rank of the Church of Constantinople

Protodeacon Andrei Kuraev* (recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent), defrocked by Patriarch Kirill a year ago, published in his Telegram channel a tomos (church decree) of the Orthodox Church of Constantinople on his restoration to the rank.

The document says: “We reviewed your appeal, studied the issues concerning you, and came to the conclusion that the canonical punishments imposed on you do not correspond to church standards. We restore you to the position of clergy and to the rank that you previously held.”

Also, Protodeacon Kuraev was now included among the clergy of the Church of Constantinople.

Patriarch Kirill deprived Kuraev of his rank last year. The Moscow diocesan court made a similar decision two years earlier, but a moratorium was imposed. However, the protodeacon showed no signs of repentance and continued his “destructive activities.”

Kuraev, whose views did not always coincide with the official position of the Russian Orthodox Church, noted that his conflict with the patriarch was not personal, but “theological.”

The archdeacon left Russia and is currently in the Czech Republic. Last year, the Ministry of Justice included him in the list of foreign agents, accusing him of spreading disinformation about the actions of Russian authorities in Ukraine. Kuraev himself called this decision strange, since his blog does not contain political statements or support for foreign agents.
